They were being used earlier also, but were not as popular as they have been in 2012. Ecommerce websites made the maximum use of modal windows for generating log-in forms, registration forms, picture gallery, etc.

Larger screen size has become very common these days. A website must not make the user feel as if their screen space is getting wasted because the site is not compatible to their size. No one likes white space on the sides. For this, designers made the designs look vibrant and smooth in a way that it fills the whole screen and rest is aligned as usual.
